I always wanted to do a “Grease” parody showing Johnny in high school. This original pitch ended up being much more serious than intended, but we eventually got to a place where it was more funny than serious. This was the first opportunity that I got to use Vince Clarke, the founder of Depeche Mode, Yaz, and Erasure. The first song was a take on “Da-Doo” from “Little Shop of Horrors” but with the music stylings from “Only You” by Yaz and the second one was a take on the stylings of “Just Can’t Get Enough.” I had a great time writing the two songs with him and got an even bigger treat when we got Richard Butler, the lead singer of The Psychedelic Furs, to record the last song. The background singers were two Powerpuff Girls (Tara Strong and Catherine Cavadini) and Tony Award winner, Lea (Miss Saigon) Salonga. I was surprised with how the final piece ended up having such an amazing musical pedigree.
Johnny must run to a date. Basically, he runs a lot.

The inspiration for this episode was, of course, “Run Lola Run.” I was so awestruck by the movie, that I watched it a second time after my first viewing, just so I could feel “the rush” again.
